Doreen Koenig left her legacy as a lifelong philanthropist. The late wife to President Keith Koenig, Doreen was best known for making her mark on Broward County as the driving force behind diverse community causes. Alongside Keith, their beneficiaries include the Covenant House Florida, the Broward Unit of the American Cancer Society, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Florida, and the Museum of Discovery and Science in Fort Lauderdale.
Among Doreen’s best-known projects was leading the campaign to raise $15 million to create the Dorothy Mangurian Comprehensive Women’s Center at Holy Cross Hospital. After the center opened in 2010, she continued to raise money for it, efforts that created a program to offer free medical and breast cancer screenings in medically underserved neighborhoods.
Just three years later Doreen was diagnosed with breast cancer, after working so hard to save others from the disease. And even through her challenging months of treatment and care, Doreen continued to give back to others, including a campaign to fund a new maternity unit at Holy Cross Hospital.
Doreen fought with bravery until July 10, 2015, and to this day her efforts touch and improve the lives of so many in our community. We are forever grateful for her compassion, and today we celebrate a life brave in spirit, and strong in love.
